Trip permits are required for vehicles which weighs over 26,000 pounds or has 3 axles, operating in other member jurisdictions if a Rhode Island based registrant does not apportion with that jurisdiction. If not proportionally registered before entering any other member jurisdiction, a trip permit must be secured and carried in the vehicle's cab for which issued or the vehicle may be subject to the full registration fees assessment in that jurisdiction.
Trip permits are intended to use for occasional or emergency need and not to evade proportional registration.
Trip permits are available from each member jurisdiction and can order in advance from the jurisdiction for which the permit is needed or obtain through Transmitter Services.
Rhode Island provides a temporary registration for owner-operators who do not operate as a lessor. An owner-operator apply for a 20-day hunter permit and submits Form MV-585 along pays $10.00 to the Commercial Registration Section or purchase the permit from the lessee or permit agent.
Motor Carriers operating qualifying motor vehicles and do not wish to participate in the IFTA program must obtain a trip permit to travel through IFTA member jurisdictions, as per the laws and regulations of each jurisdiction.
